[LMS] How to beat : Midnight Sun Esports? Part 1 : #statistics

How to beat : Midnight Sun Esports? #statistics

Scouting Report

MSE is a new rising team in LMS with 3 HK player and 2 Korean player. Which is the only team in LMS had no Taiwanese player. The coach of MSE is the S2 World Champion Lilballz.
Due to the fact that MSE is not well-known in the western scene so I should had a quick introduction about the team.

Roster: LOFS(top) ; Empt2(jg) ; caNdy(mid) ; Stitch(ad) ; Chunx(sup) ; M1ssion(sub)

caNdy and Stich is the two new players add into MSE, they both are in Xenics Storm before in Korea. Although caNdy are not well-known in the scene but I think Stich (former id LuNar) should be known around Korean scene quite well as he is LCK level player but fail to qualify.
Before the two Koreans join the team. LOFS is the only carry threat in the team and known as the 2nd top laner in LMS, the fact that no one in western scene care about the LMS scene so that he is not well known in the west but I would say that LOFS have the potential to be a world-class player, his skill level should be on the same level or higher around Odoamne in H2k but should not be better than Huni in Fnatic. Empt2 is also a decent player that should be consider to be in the top tier player list in LMS but his performance was highly covered by his teammates and the fact that there are few more well known jungler in LMS such as DinTer Mountain Karsa.

As the last summoning insight ep.50 which host by Thorin and Monte with special guest Clement. There are not too many topics around MSE(or I should say the LMS Summer), therefore I would like to introduce to you about Midnight Sun Esports, a team which will likely be at S5 Worlds.

LOFS - A high potential of being a world class tier player

I will breakdown the statistics of each player one by one, starting from our new rising talent, LOFS. From the stat that I could record, LOFS KDA is the highest in his team with a 13.4 average KDA per game. A very high stat but the most important factor that made this record was his deaths, he scored and average of 1 deaths per game which is ridiculously low in a competitive game as a top laner. The next important stat must mention is his kills participation, the 2nd highest in his team, just about 2% fewer than the highest kills participation in his team.

As I mentioned before during the introduction, LOFS should be consider the 2nd best top laner in LMS, there are few different reasons I said this. LOFS outstanding abilities are in different dimensions. His laning, team-fights and his types of champions using. LOFS can score a sum of 8.5 cs and 16.7 cs more than his opponents at 10mins and 20mins respectively. It shows his abilities on his laning phase. However, his cs% in his team is 25%, I can assume that his role in MSE before the Koreans joins is the main carry threat, thus he needs those high amount of cs to ensure his capacity. And after the Koreans join he should change his style a little bit in order to give more rooms for the Koreans to carry, and this can be show in the series when MSE vs LGS. In Game 1, MSE mid lane was M1ssion, the cs% of LOFS to his team is 27% while in the second Game, MSE out caNdy as their mid lane and LOFS cs% to his team is 22%. Apparently there was a difference in it. While LOFS mainly played Hecarim and Maokai only, both had a pretty decent win rate, however these are two very different style of champions, however LOFS can show almost the same impact on both of them.

Although there are many positive stat I had mention. There was a phenomena that really get MSE hold back. Whenever LOFS can not win his lane or can not get ahead in his lane, MSE will mostly lost that game. I would love to say MSE is very similar to GAMBIT in the EU LCS, they rely on the top&jungle interaction very heavily. Empt2 will mostly start the bottom half of the jungle camps in the beginning in order to gank on LOFS lane around level 3 or 4 to help him to get ahead. I found out that Empt2 will mostly stay on the top-half of the map during the first 10-15mins just to secure LOFS early game development. I will analyze this more in depth in the 2nd part of "How to beat : MSE".

Just a short conclusion on LOFS, there is almost can nothing can be fastidious on him by statistics.

Stitch - The new main carry

Stitch should not be a unfamiliar guy if you have followed the Korean Scene. His former id is LuNar, after Xenics fail to qualify for the LCK Summer LuNar was picked by the IM organization however he can not attend the 1st round of LCK due to the roster lock before he was add to the roster, he then later join MSE with his old teammates caNdy.

From the statistics that I can get, Stitch is not the the kind of solo player, but more like a team player. His kills, assists or KDA is not that impressive but his kills participation is quite impressive with 76%. A pretty high percentage as an AD carry. Rather that his kills participation is outperforming, I would say his efficiency of resources usage in the team is really interesting. He gets 29% of his team cs while 24% of the team gold while giving out average 27% of damage of his team. The average damage he dual is the highest in MSE which it is not a good sign in this meta. In this meta, Mid laner should always dual more damage than AD carry.( There was a statistics that show the ranking of DPM on the internet and highest ranking on AD carry ranked 13 while the first twelve ranking are all mid laner.

Meanwhile there are many weakness on Stitch statistics. He only place an average of 1.8 wards per game which is -3.2 to its opponents, there may be some reasons behind it and can be discussed, such as he will change his trinket really early in the game so he could not place free trinket wards. However there are one stat that can not be argued. Stitch did not buy a pink ward in any of his games, this is a serious problem the fact that there is a wards restrictions thus everyone in the team should help to maintain the vision control. There not much to say about Stitch stat and I found out that Stitch main problems was his positioning in team fights which I will cover in the next part of my "How to beat : MSE " .

caNdy - Upgrade or ?

Yes if you read the heading of this section, I am using an interrogative sentence but not a declarative sentence. There are always many discussion about Korean imports is a "parallel good" or "dealer good" in LMS Region. (I know the words sounds like very strange but I can not find any better words that can describe the situation.) In my own opinions, caNdy was really under performing in some games as an top tier player but he is still above average LMS mid laner.

caNdy's KDA is the same with Stitch, one sentence to conclude, nothing special. His kills participation is not that impressive as Stitch also with 71% only, the lowest % in MSE. He also had a cs difference to his opponents at 10mins and 20mins with -6.8 and -9.8 cs respectively. The amount of cs he occupy from his team in average is 29% but he can only deliver out 26% of his team damage to champions, a pretty low stat in this meta which the main damage dealer should be the Mid laner. It is still hard to say is caNdy really a "parallel good" or not due to the fact that he had only played 5 games up until now. Just by the statistics that I got, there is no sign of caNdy is an upgrade of  M1ssion by stat but caNdy should be an upgrade on other perspective respect to M1ssion such as champion pool or abilities in laning phase and team fighting. While M1ssion mainly played Lulu, a more supporting champion instead of carrying champion, caNdy can play champions like Viktor or Cassopia etc meta champions, and I think MSE should be pleased by the import on both Koreans up to now with the fact that they improve and add in more different types of style into the team and become more threatening.

There is one thing that caNdy did really well his recent games. He placed an average of 28 wards per game, which is 21.82% of MSE total wards and has the same amount of wards place by Empt2. In other words he helped to build up a great vision for his team but in exchange with a lower damage output. Actually this is pretty funny that he placed an average 12 more wards than his opponents,  but his farming is lower than his opponents in average.

Chunx - The Captain of all

Chunx is the captain of this team back when they still an amateur team called Team Legends God & No Game No L1fe. As an captain of the team, I think he is highly underrated. When we talk about the supports in LMS, we will think of Swordart Albis Olleh or even Greentea in the past. But we never, never think of Chunx is a top tier support in LMS. If you would like me to talk about the most underrated player in LMS, then it must be Chunx.

By just looking into his KDA, he had the lowest KDA in MSE, just a 74% kills participation contribution that is nothing compare to his teammates. The main purpose of support role is to control vision to support the team. Just by looking at the stat after the Koreans joins, Chunx average wards placed per game is 51.8 and placed 15 wards more than his opponents. The average wards placed in LMS by support is only around 35-40, due to the fact that I can not collect stat from LPL therefore I found a graph about wards placed during the S4 worlds. (link) As you can see, except the VISION GOD Mata placed a ridiculously high amounts of wards, none of the other famous support will place more than an average 50 wards per game. It really shows how many effort did Chunx put in by this stat. Other than that, Chunx also score a very efficient stat, he only got 13.38% of MSE total gold but his damage taken is 21%, the highest average damage taken as a support in the region, it is really hard to make this stat because Supports tends to be easily get killed in this meta.

The main problems that Chunx have should be his deaths. He has the highest deaths in his team, he will easily be caught out when trying to make plays or warding, I will analyze on this more in the 2nd part of "How to beat : MSE". I really hope that someone can look up to him because he is really underrated, many comments on him is "very skilled" "good mechanics" but no one mention his effort on putting down wards for vision.

Empt2 - Another underrated player in MSE

Empt2 should be the most weird person in LMS. He has 2 Nationalities, Hong Kong & Canada, know how to speak more than 4 language, including Cantonese Mandarin English Korean. While Empt2 is the weirdest person in LMS, his performance is also underrated with Chunx. I assume that this is only because the fans will only focus on their Koreans imports or else, I really hope Chunx and Empt2 can get rating more highly in the near future. Both of them are the main reason why MSE can success by using this strategy.

Empt2 kills participation in MSE is 84%, the highest in the team with a 9.1 KDA the second highest in the team. He does not have too many kills but with many assists, his farming is pretty interesting also, while he wont get a huge cs lead during the first 20 minutes but he ends up with an average of +21cs than his opponents, not a huge lead but already the highest lead in his team. You may also found out that Empt2 wards placed is not that high considering the high amounts of wards his teammates had placed, and I think this is the main reasons why I think MSE is different with others. If you remember what I siad is positive on caNdy is his wards placed, caNdy will place a tons of wards, therefore, Empt2 does not need to place a high amount of wards because caNdy already does. There are two explanation of this situation, the 1st one will be Empt2 did not need to buy a tons of wards and his gold can focus more on his builds. The 2nd explanation will be due to the fact that Empt2 needs to baby sit LOFS lane so he can not place too many wards and he can not gain too much gold. I would prefer the 2nd explanation because Empt2 average gold % and damage % is not that high in MSE. Another stat that should be mention is his damage taken only takes 29% of his team total damage taken, it is rarely seen a jungler did not take more than 30% of his team total damage taken.

There are still many reasons behind why I say Empt2 is an underrated player, such as the diversity of his champion pools and his mechanics, but all of there should be cover in the 2nd part of my analyze so I am not going to take a further analyze here.

Conclusion of the Statistics on MSE with Koreans

Before the Korean joins, the damage threat was many from AD carry and Top lane, and with the addition of two Koreans, the damage dealt become more spread among the 3 carries. The vision control of MSE is also disgusting, although I am not sure are they the highest wards placed team per game but I am pretty sure this must be outstanding. Another honorable mention is the damage taken spread very wide, with Empt2 only tale 29% of total damage taken and 23% and 21% damage taken for LOFS and Chunx respectively, 3 of them showed a very high abilities on their respective role and would not be the encumber on the team, while I still have question on the Koreans.

This is the end of part 1 "How to beat : MSE". The next part will be analyzing the plays and warding about MSE and their strength and weaknesses.
